Signs of spider infestation

In Hobart, spiders are usually most active in the autumn months, before hibernating for winter. If you’re concerned you may have an infestation, look for webs or spiders hiding in crevices of your home. Keep an eye out for round, white egg sacs which usually carry around 100 eggs each. These are an early warning sign of an influx of baby spiders, so if you spot these it’s a good time to get a spider pest control professional out to deal with the problem.

How do I get spider pest control?

Most spiders will keep out of your way, but their webs can be a nuisance, and some species can be dangerous, particularly to unsuspecting pets and children who may get themselves bitten.

Spider control usually starts with us coming out to assess the situation, identify the species and give you a quote, before deciding on the most suitable treatment.

If you commonly run into spider problems, we usually recommend a general pest spray every 6 to 12 months to keep them out of your house and garden.

There are almost 40,000 different species of spiders in the world, but only 6 of these are regularly found in Hobart and Southern Tasmania.

Black house spiders

Black house spiders are dark grey to black, and tend to build funnel-shaped webs on tree trunks and foliage outdoors, and on window frames and wall crevices inside. They rarely bite, but when they do their bites can be very painful and cause allergic-type reactions.

Daddy-long-legs spiders

Daddy-long-legs spiders are easily recognised by their long, very thin legs perched on a small, pale brown body. They make small, tangled webs, and tend to live indoors – whether that be on your ceiling, behind furniture, in sheds or under decks. They are rarely harmful to humans.

Huntsman spiders

Huntsman spiders may look scary but are relatively harmless. Large, grey/brown, hairy-looking spiders, they dwell in crevices between rocks or under bark outside, but often enter houses and even cars.

Redback Spiders

Redbacks are easily identified by their red stripe on a black body. They build tangled, funnel-shaped webs close to the ground, and dwell in sheltered places such as between rocks or under junk piles – which is why you should always take care before reaching into enclosed spaces in your backyard. The female bite is dangerous and can cause illness and even death if not dealt with immediately.

White-tailed spiders

White-tailed spiders are dark reddish to grey in colour, with orange and brown striped legs and a white spot on the tip of their abdomen. You’ll find them dwelling under leaf litter and between rocks outside, but they commonly venture indoors as well. They’re not a spider you want to have around, as their bites cause significant pain, swelling, and occasional blistering.

Wolf spiders

Wolf spiders live on the ground in leaf litter or burrows, and you may discover them in your garden. They are mostly brown and yellow, grey, or black and white in colour. Their bite is about as dangerous as a bee sting – not poisonous, but can cause swelling, prolonged pain and allergic reactions.
